The hand-colored etching above was featured as "Print of the Month" in a recent issue of Solar Plate Newsletter distributed by Hampton Editions, Ltd.

As a printmaker I develop my compositions using on-location 35 mm and digital photography as well as objects set directly on the scanner bed. This piece began with an old friend of mine, whom I shall call Wendy. Rubber bands having decayed, her tiny doll-body was in pieces. I wrapped her truncated form in gauze, and perhaps with the unconscious desire to give her wholeness, laid her on the scanner bed along with a found bird wing. Elements were layered and integrated with computer software to create a final image that I felt embodied both visual and emotional depth. Adding old dental x-rays as a structural form, the resulting imagery evolved, portraying a history of decay and renewal that resonated with me. I printed my B&W transparency off an old Epson 1520 and burned my image on a commercial exposure unit at a college facility. I prefer to custom mix my oil-based inks and will often hand-color prints (as in the above) with water-soluble crayon and pencil. Here you also see gold leaf added as a finishing touch.
